Antidepressant response and side effects vary. Benefits can take several weeks to develop, and follow-up helps your provider assess whether treatment is helping. Do not stop or change medication without discussing it with your prescriber.
If previous treatment has not helped enough, your provider can review the diagnosis, prior treatment and other options. These may include medication changes, psychotherapy or an evaluation for treatments such as TMS, Spravato or off-label ketamine infusions when appropriate. Each has distinct benefits, risks and eligibility requirements.
Talk with a provider when low mood, loss of interest or other symptoms persist, cause distress or interfere with life. You can seek help even if you are unsure whether symptoms meet a diagnosis. For immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Bring a list of medications, doses, how long you took them, side effects and prior therapy. Your provider can reassess contributing factors and discuss next steps. Do not change treatment on your own.
Ask about psychotherapy, medication management and whether an evaluation for TMS, Spravato or ketamine infusions is appropriate. Treatment recommendations and insurance coverage are individualized.
